Despite Canada’s rich film culture, Canadian made films remain largely absent from our own cinemas a phenomenon I set out to investigate. CanCon Arrested Development, a look under the hood of Canada’s film industry, reflects my ongoing inquiry into the limited presence of Canadian made films in Canadian cinemas. This exploration was initiated by an observation in my first film studies class: "Canadians do not own or control our cinema" as stated by the instructor. Having won a Floyd Chalmers writing award for my stage play, I was motivated to understand and utilize this medium for storytelling, I posed questions regarding the visibility and sustainability of Canadian productions within the industry. However, these concerns were met without satisfactory resolution. Over the years, my curiosity deepened as I continue to seek answers, so too did limited visibility of Canadian films on Canadian cinemas persisted, yet comprehensive answers to the ‘why’ question remained elusive. This led to writing and producing the documentary Made In Canada. The documentary interviews with filmmakers and audience alike, confirmed distribution barriers and lack of audience awareness as major factors limiting Canadian film’s presence in cinemas. This documentary graphic novel tells the tale of how we got into this century-old mess, clocking 105 years. Address the longstanding challenges facing Canadian content efforts to secure distribution into Canada’s cinematic infrastructure. In addition to highlighting the groundbreaking work of organizations such as Network Independent Canadian Exhibitors (NICE), Donald Shebib TIFF Film Circuit, and REEL Canada, in meeting the challenge of making Canadian content accessible to Canadians. These groups have been instrumental in establishing a ‘near’ national distribution infrastructure for Canadian content, and the blueprint created by their proactivism could be the paradigm shift we need to answer YES! to ‘Have you seen a Canadian film lately?’
